West Lancashire Yacht Club

....The Home Of The 24 Hour Race

For dinghy sailing West Lancashire Yacht Club sailors have access to Southport's Marine Lake as well as regular racing on the sea from the beach at Ainsdale throughout the summer.

RYA Champion Club

In mid-1999 West Lancashire Yacht Club won the status of RYA Champion Club (sponsored at that time by Volvo). WLYC is understood to be only the third club in UK and the first club in the North West of England to win this prestigious status. The award is given only to clubs offering the highest standards in all aspects of sailing and sail/race training, together with a proven record of high achievement at both National and International sailing events.

Racing is from March to the end of October. Southport Marine Lake is ideally suited for all-year-round sailing and SSC (our neighbours on the lake) provide open Frostbite Racing during the winter months. WLYC club racing is primarily on the Marine Lake on Thursday evenings, with alternate Sunday mornings either on the Marine Lake or on the Sea at Southport (or Ainsdale).

Offshore Section

What would a yacht club be without an active offshore sailing section? While the gradual silting up of the channels off Southport beach having Southport as a home port inpractical; WLYC still has a group of members who take an active interest in offshore sailing. Several have yachts of their own in which they visit some of the world’s most spectacular cruising grounds; others act as crew for members or charter yachts for their holidays. To support these adventures as a recognised RYA Training Centre we organise navigation courses; in addition, club offshore cruises and practical courses are arranged.

Although the Offshore Fleet is no longer active at Southport because of the poor mooring facilities, we do still have an enthusiastic offshore group with regular meetings in the clubhouse and cruises organised during the summer months.

Radio Racing

The RC Laser (Radio Controlled Laser) has been a class of boat raced at WLYC for many years, mainly in the off season during the winter.

The boat is a ¼ scale version of the Laser Standard and has 4 rigs of different sizes to cope with the varying wind conditions. It is a true one design, as all the boats are identical and the skill of the competitor is what comes through at the end.

In 2011 WLYC hosted the National Championship on the lake and in 2013 the inaugural World Championships were held at WLYC. This attracted entries from France, the Nederland’s, Australia and the UK.
