Sailability provides opportunities for people with a disability to sail.
A wide range of people sail at West Lancashire Yacht Club, from infant school to well past retirement age. Some members compete at regional, national or international level. Many others find club racing on the Marine Lake enough challenge, or sail just for fun on quiet club nights. In two person dinghies there are many combinations of age, weight and experience - and each pair finds a different way to work to their individual strengths.
The club doesn't have a separate section for sailors with disabilities but has RYA Sailability Foundation status. This means it is suitable for people with .minor. disabilities. There are contact details below if you would like to take part in a Sailability taster session, or to visit the club to see if we can meet your needs.
There is a season of Sailability Taster Sessions, usually from early May to mid July. Normally these are for 6 people, who can be from the same group, or individuals. In addition, young or vulnerable people are accompanied on the water by carers or parents. Sometimes a disabled person takes part with a partner or family member, to find out if it is an activity that they will be able to enjoy together.
Experienced instructors sail with small groups, usually in a club dinghy that can take three or four people. We also have a single seater Sunbird with a heavy keel, designed for people who have restricted movement. It has a fixed seat and controls within easy reach.
The session is tailored to your needs. After some preparation, you will be able to spend time on the water, in a dinghy or powerboat or both. If you enjoy the session, you can discuss the next step. If you are unable to book a session on these dates, please contact the Club to arrange a visit.
To be independent, you need to know how the wind works on the sails, how to steer and balance the boat, how to avoid collisions and what to do in an emergency. The Club runs a range of RYA courses each year. In the summer, there are social sailing evenings. These are informal sessions, and useful for practicing basic skills or sailing with a more experienced club member.
