RYA Training LogoRYA Junior Training

West Lancashire Yacht Club has an active junior section, with training most Saturdays afternoons from April until October, as well as sailing or racing on Tuesdays, Thursdays and Sundays.

We are a Royal Yachting Association Training Centre and Sailability and OnBoard club and Children’s University accredited.

Our juniors race at all levels, up to world championship and we regularly have children in RYA squads.

Our Saturday training follows the RYA youth syllabus and RYA pathway, but our emphasis is on fun. Our juniors compete in three team competitions each year, travelling to Hollingworth Lake, Southport Sailing Club and our own 24 Hour Race, as well as being encouraged to compete in sailing competitions home and away.

RYA OnBoard LogoAs part of the RYA OnBoard scheme children from 6 to 16 can attend Saturday training sessions up to a maximum of 5 times without membership. The session runs from 1pm until 3pm and the cost is £5.

Sailing is a wet sport and children need to wear clothes and shoes they don’t mind getting wet. They also need to have a spare change of clothes, a towel, something to put their wet clothes in, sun cream and warm layers.

A responsible adult needs to be on site at all times.

The session is run entirely by volunteers, including the RYA instructors and coaches, the members in the kitchen serving refreshments and the helpers on the welcome table.
